Flags:
My flags are sewn together from fabric remnants and use collaged elements from popular culture. Their tongue- in –cheek critique of culture alludes to both David Hammond’s African-American flag and Jasper John’s American flags, which appropriate and re-conceptualize the flag’s symbolism for political purposes and aesthetic discourse.
My different versions of the American flag underscore its ubiquity in American society and its constancy as a symbol of freedom and unity. Beginning with the familiar red, white, and blue, my embellishes the flags with found materials to claim the symbol of its own characteristic.
The resulting series of flags bespeak a personal philosophical and political stance; and they remind you that even a seemingly immutable icon such as the American flag is ultimately imbued with the desires and the needs of the person viewing it.
